The most anticipated Ashes series in a generation begins on Friday with the opening Test at Edgbaston.

In five games spread over the following six weeks, everything will be resolved.

Will Australia finally defeat England on these shores after 22 years, or will England win the series for the first time since 2015?

In five games spread over the following six weeks, everything will be resolved.

Why is this year so special?

The Ashes is one of the longest-running and most legendary sporting rivalries, but this year promises to be particularly memorable.

Under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, England has experienced an exciting transition since losing 4-0 when these teams last met in Australia 18 months ago.

They have won 11 out of 13 Test matches while engaging in an exciting, attacking manner. Records are being broken, sixes are being struck, and wickets are being taken like never before for Stokes' England.

Australia, however, presents a strong challenge.

They brutally defeated India last week to win the Test world championship, giving rise to the notion that this could be the best Ashes matchup since the legendary series in 2005.

So who will win?

That's all there is to it. Nobody really is aware.

Seven of the Test Match Special pundits predicted that England would hold the urn at the end of July, while just six predicted Australia to win.

Australia, led by Pat Cummins, is the small favourite according to the bookies.
How the tourists handle England's aggressive strategy and how the daring English hitters perform against Australia's frightening bowlers are the intriguing questions.

Who are the players to watch?
  1. Ben Stokes.
  2. Steve Smith.
  3. Joe Root.
  4. James Anderson.
  5. Travis Head.
  6. Cummins.
  7. Scott Boland.
